Hi again.
This past month has been a chaotic one for me. Too much to do and yet nothing to do I found creating and writing at the very end of my to-do list. I thought too hard about what to write about this month and came up with nothing. The truth is I’ve been very uninspired. But I have been reading. I actually found it really hard to write when all I’ve been wanting to do is read words written by others. So I figured I’d share my favorite read at the minute and a couple of other books I consider my favorites. So here are some great books with little to no explanation other than my own biased opinion. Hope you enjoy it.
My Latest Read
This Thing Between Us by Gus Moreno
Cried within the first 50 pages. Actually took me so long to get through it because I didn’t want to finish it. Grief and love and evil technology slash spirits- the whole 9 yards! So heartbreakingly well-written I couldn’t stop the spine from bending even if I tried.
My First Love
Bonechiller by Graham McNamee
The first time I read this book I was about 11 or so. It’s sad, romantic, full of monsters, a Canadian chill, and characters that feel like friends. I’ve read it 6 times. Easy read, but I’m a slut for nostalgia. The first book I remember staying up all night to finish so it holds a special place in my heart.
The Bread and Butter of Introspective Creatives
Aqua Viva by Clarice Lispector
Read it twice mainly because I didn’t like it very much the first time. The second time really hit it home. It’s honest and joyous and dripped in oil paints. Felt like I was being pulled into a reflection on water, slowly and peacefully, and I was not upset about it. Made me want to cut my hair (I did).
Poetry
Asylum by Jill Bialosky
Another victim of the bookstore shopping spree to a dust collector on a shelf pipeline. Glad I picked it up. A collection of poems on life, grief, nature, and the pains of existing (in my opinion). I find it hard to read poetry I think repetitive or just not relatable, but this was very different. The story was told so beautifully I thought it could’ve been my own. Also, page 41<3.
More Poetry
Essential Bukowski, a collection by Abel Debritto
It’s fucking Bukowski do I really need to give my opinion? I used to read him a lot in school because I had a weird poetry faze when I was 14, as we all do. Anyway, Do You Want to Enter the Arena made me want to be an artist- page 203 in the book.
Very Handy
Trees by Herbert S. Zim, Ph.D., Sc.D. & Alexander C. Martin, Ph.D.
A guide to North American trees. Good to keep in your bag, you never know when you’ll need to do some good ole tree identifying.
Teacher’s Pet Shit
The Hours by Michael Cunningham
My high school English teacher gave this to me and I’m pretty sure I was supposed to give it back. A story I could read over and over and never get tired of. Thanks, Mrs. White, without you, I would’ve never known my deep love for complex characters that would manifest in weird ways in my life for years to come. But in the best way possible.
My One True Love
Moon Song by Sonja Massie
My mom picked this up at a garage sale years ago so she could make the empty shelves in the house look less empty. I just thought the title was nice and read it. It’s magical and romantic and heroic and witchy and then more romantic. My favorite piece of magic and lovely storytelling and it’s still one of my favorites to this day.
Well, that’s it! If you’re interested in any of these I always recommend ThriftBooks for some good deals. I love to find new authors or books so message me on IG with your favorite book recs. Thanks for reading.
Take care.
